When someone nearby searches for a clinic, a hardware shop or a caterer, the first thing they usually see is the map and three businesses under it. For many local businesses, that small box brings more customers than any website or social media page. Here is how to make the most of it.
Why it matters
People searching on Google Maps are often ready to act: they want directions, a phone number or opening hours now. A complete, active profile with good reviews is what decides whether they call you or the shop next door.
Set it up properly
- Exact business name: the name on your signboard. Do not stuff keywords into it; Google can suspend profiles that do.
- The right primary category: the single most important setting. Choose the category that matches what most customers come for, then add secondary categories.
- Address and pin: check the map pin lands on your entrance, not the middle of the road.
- Phone and WhatsApp: a number that is answered during business hours.
- Hours, including holidays: update them for festivals. Nothing loses trust faster than arriving at a closed shutter.
- Products and services: list your main ones with prices or price ranges where you can.
- Real photos: your storefront, inside, your team and your products. Skip stock images.
Reviews: the system, not the hope
Most happy customers will leave a review if you ask at the right moment and make it easy. Most will not think of it on their own.
- Create your review link from the profile dashboard.
- Ask at the moment of satisfaction: when the order is delivered, the treatment is done or the customer says thank you.
- Send the link on WhatsApp with one short line. Print a QR code at the counter.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and within a few days.
Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for five stars. It breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed or the profile penalised.
Keep it active
- Post an update or offer once or twice a week: a new product, a festival offer, a customer question answered.
- Answer the questions people ask on your profile.
- Add new photos every month.
Measure real enquiries
Your profile dashboard shows calls, direction requests and website clicks. Track them every month next to what you actually sold. We do not count "leads" that never turn into customers. We count real enquiries: calls, WhatsApp messages and people who walk in.
For a local business, the map listing is often the shop window most customers see first.
