"People like our posts, but nobody buys." We hear this often. Almost every time, the business has content and it has a product, but nothing connects the two. That missing connection is called a sales funnel.
What a funnel is
A sales funnel is simply the set of steps that takes someone from first noticing you to paying you. It is called a funnel because many people enter at the top and fewer reach each next step. You cannot make everyone buy. You can stop losing the people who were ready to.
The four stages
- Notice: they see you for the first time, through a post, an ad, a search or a referral.
- Interest: they want to know more, so they visit your page, watch a video or read a post.
- Decision: they compare, ask questions and check reviews, prices and proof.
- Action: they buy, book or enquire, and ideally come back again.
Each stage needs something different. Content works at the top. Clear pages and answers work in the middle. A simple way to pay or book works at the bottom. Follow-up brings back the ones who were not ready yet.
Three examples
A D2C skincare brand
Instagram reel (notice) → product page with ingredients, before-and-after and reviews (interest and decision) → one-click checkout with cash on delivery (action) → WhatsApp reminder for people who left items in the cart (follow-up).
A coach or expert
LinkedIn or YouTube post (notice) → free guide or webinar in exchange for an email (interest) → a short sequence of useful emails with one clear offer (decision) → a booking or payment page (action).
A local service business
Google Maps listing or local ad (notice) → reviews and photos (interest and decision) → a WhatsApp chat or call that gets a quick reply (action) → a review request after the service (which feeds the top of the funnel again).
Where funnels usually break
- No next step: great content that never tells people what to do next.
- The page doesn't match the promise: the ad says one thing, the page says another.
- Too many steps: forms that ask for everything, checkouts that need an account.
- No follow-up: people who were interested but not ready are never contacted again.
You cannot make everyone buy. You can stop losing the people who were ready to.
