Diagnosis

What a business audit should cover before you spend on marketing

A marketing or business audit should tell you what is wrong, why, and what to fix first. Here is what a useful audit covers, and what to ignore.

Most businesses buy marketing the way people buy medicine without a diagnosis: they pick what a friend used or what an agency is selling that month. A business audit is the diagnosis. Done properly, it saves you from paying for the wrong fix.

Why audit first

Falling sales can come from a weak offer, a confusing website, ads aimed at the wrong people, slow follow-up or a price nobody understands. Each needs a different fix. An agency that sells one service will usually find that their service is the answer. An audit is supposed to find out which one actually is.

What a useful audit covers

Your brand

Does your brand show why you are worth the price? Is the message clear, consistent and aimed at the customers you want? If customers compare you on price alone, the brand is usually part of the problem.

Your website

Does it explain why someone should choose you, not just what you do? Does it load quickly on a phone, answer the questions customers ask, and ask them to act?

Your social media

Is your content leading anywhere? Likes and followers are not the goal. The audit should check whether there is a path from your content to an enquiry or a sale.

Your ads

Who are they reaching, what do they promise, where do they send people, and what does each real enquiry cost?

Your sales process

What happens after someone enquires: how fast you reply, how you follow up, and where people drop off. This is often where the biggest losses are, and the area most audits skip.

What you should get at the end

  • A plain-language list of what is wrong and why, in order of importance.
  • What to fix first, and what can wait.
  • Which of these you can fix yourselves, and which need outside help.

You should be able to act on it with or without the people who wrote it.

Signs of a weak audit

  • It is mostly scores and charts with no clear "fix this first".
  • Every finding happens to point to the auditor's own services.
  • It looks only at social media or only at ads, not at how you sell.
  • It uses jargon you cannot repeat to your team.
